ap0202.01 presents environment/code options for specialised access to
filesystems, local and global network data, midi data, video and audio
device input, as well as the range of unix devices. both vector and pixel
output are provided under SDL [using aalib, svga, fb or x] + full range of
available devices (eg. /dev/speech).
ap0202.01 compiles and runs under gnu/linux and is available under a GPL
license. both a core cellular vm app and cellspace viewer can be
downloaded.
ap0202.01 is involved in the evolution of the ap performance system and
ap.os.
ap is concerned with the liberation of data encoding and generation from any
given model or architecture (any fixed operating system in its widest sense)
ap02 presents a promiscuous model of data generation and self-display,
making use of a virtual machine architecture to develop and execute self
modifying instruction sets across networked nodes. Reconfigurable code is
interwoven with and determined by network and environmental data. Nodes
expand virally through diverse machine environments as they actively seek
for data across any network. The body of the work is code (material) and in
work this code is made evident, visible. The only functionality of ap02 is
in self display; showing its own changing, performative code as it runs.
ap02 is expressed within two interwoven projects; as physical self display
devices and as a freely available, distributed networked application.
ap0202 makes use of current de-centralized p2p (peer to peer)
inter-networking technologies to implement multiple self display devices
virtually on any networked machine. The environment for the changing code is
both the network and the machine on which the software is running. Cells of
code promiscuously modify and are modified by data available to the machine;
audio input and output, video, stored information and visual display. Code
cells communicate, split and join with other code cells both locally and
across the global network, working through a vast memory environment
composed of both data and code. ap0202 explores new models of cellular
coding of great use for future work, implementing flexible new instruction
sets and questioning the separation of data and environment from code.
ap0202 was developed as part of emare residency at v2_lab rotterdam with the

Organization / Literature: Beyond Equivalence and Antinomy
A stream at the 3rd Critical Management Studies Conference ‘Critique
and Inclusivity: Opening the Agenda’, Lancaster, UK, 7-9 July 2003.

In recent years, writers on organization have increasingly been
turning their attention to the question of ‘writing’. Variously this
has taken the form of an enquiry into the nature of organizing as a
mode of inscription, the study of specific organizational texts, the
analysis of writing on organization, or the generalized application of
a textual metaphor to all things organizational. This broad textual
turn in organization studies inverts the previously assumed antinomy
between literature and social-scientific writing. In doing so
organization itself is reconfigured as a mode of inscription, and
writing on organization becomes a form of literary endeavour. From
being in a relationship of opposition, literature and organization
have thus moved to a position of undifferentiated equivalence, a
position equally as problematic as the traditional facile distinction
between fact and fiction.
This stream seeks an escape from this binary bind by reconsidering the
relationship between organization and literature more symmetrically.
To this end, the stream will emphasise both the organization of
literature and the literature of organization:
· The literature of organization. We encourage papers that eschew an
instrumental view of literary theory and instead seek a critical
engagement with ways of writing organization. As well as reconsidering
the literary conventions of academic writing on organization, this
move necessitates an opening onto literature itself as a force, not
simply as a resource to be plundered for new ideas about organizing
and managing.
· The organization of literature. We also encourage papers that
address the ways in which literature is organized. Such papers might
include a socio-political analysis of publishing industries, for
example a discussion of the political economy of the Booker prize, or
prospect the similarities/differences between canonization processes
underlying best-sellers from Hamel and Prahalad to Harry Potter.
Within these two broad divisions, suggested themes include:
· The organization of publication
· The work of interpretation
· Technologies of writing – could we build a Literature Machine?
· History and literature – shifting canons
· The value of trash? Labours of division in the production of
literature
· Literature as art, literature as method
· Conventions of academic writing
· Management science-fiction – writing the future of work
· Writing gender – inscribing bodies at work
· Autobiography and hagiography in the case study method
· A literature of ‘the other’ – postcolonial writing on organization
· When words are not enough – writing the unspeakable
We are particularly keen to encourage any papers that seek a critical
engagement with the field of literary theory, an encounter that has
the potential to inform ways of writing and organizing from a variety
of perspectives. For example, pursuing the debates surrounding
literary criticism will enable participants in the stream to reflect
upon the role of critique and the critic in the pursuit of a Critical
Management Studies. As well as addressing the conference theme of
inclusivity, this approach will enable a critical encounter with the
inscription and epistemology of organization and management.
Proposals for papers should be in the form of an extended abstract of
no more than 1500 words, to be submitted to the convenors by the 18th
October 2002. Selections will be made by 13th December 2002, with
full-length papers to be submitted by 15th April 2003.

The Center for Digital Discourse and Culture <http://www.cddc.vt.edu>
(CDDC) in the College of Arts and Sciences at Virginia Polytechnic
Institute and State University is accepting proposals for hosting
artistic, critical, literary and other projects. *
The CDDC has been in operation since 1998, and it publishes hypertext
journals, hosts digital research archives, and cooperates with many
international cyberculture organizations.
As an entirely digital point-of-publication, the CDDC is seeking from
individuals and groups, proposals of artistic or academic merit for use
of our server space. The main focus of the CDDC is to explore the new
communicative potentials of hypertext, hypermedia, and web-centered
publication. The review processes will be as extensive as those
experienced in print academic outlets, but it too will be conducted in a
fully on-line format.
Proposals should be approximately one page in length. They should
explain the work, and, if possible, provide examples (current urls) of
the work proposed. We imagine projects by individual digital artists or
writers, groups of artists, reviewed or curated online display spaces or
literary journals, and other unique endeavors will take advantage of
this service, however it is open to nearly any enterprise with artistic
or educational import as decided by our review committee. On average,
each project can be allocated a considerable amount of space (i.e.
around 50 MB, of web addressable server space, though both larger and
smaller requests will be considered), accessible from an ftp account on
the CDDC servers.

FAQ:
Q:How do I get free hosting for my online artistic/literary project at CDDC?
A:You have to submit a proposal first. That proposal then goes through a
rigorous review process and once it is accepted, then you get free hosting.
Q:Do I have to pay for this?
A:There will be no charge for this service.
Q:Can I pay to have my materials hosted and bypass the process?
A:No, there is no way to bypass the review process and while we accept
donations, they will have no affect upon the review process.
Q:I have an idea for a project, but the project is not finished,should I
submit a proposal?
A:We would strongly prefer proposals about completed projects, but will
entertain proposals about projects under construction. Projects not yet
started are unlikely to make it through the review process.
Q:Can I put ads or other profit making tools in my area in cddc?
A: No, but it is conceivable that one could use these in a form of
artistic expression, and that would be something that would go through
the review process.
Q:Will the CDDC attempt to make profit off of my work, by placing ads, etc.?
A:No
Q:Do you provide DNS resolution?
A:We are looking into it, but we know of several free services that can
resolve to our servers and do provide virtual hosting on those servers
as long as some mention of CDDC support is made on the front page or a
sponsors page.
Q:I represent a group of artists and we would like to create a site and
review the work that we want on that site, could that be hosted on CDDC?
A:Yes, we are happy to provide this service to a group of people
maintaining on ongoing or permanent exhibition space. However, we would
suggest a slightly larger proposal 2-3 pages that includes URL's to the
types of work that your group supports and would include. This proposal
will then be reviewed and if it is accepted, your group will be
given a space.

I'm putting together an exhibition of net.art for New Langton Arts,
an experimental art gallery in San Francisco, CA, for Fall 2002. This
exhibition, 'Day Jobs', is described below and explores the
relationship between a net.artist's digital day job to their
art-making activities.

This exhibition explores the relationship between net.art and its
social and economic context through case studies of individual
net.artists' day jobs in relation to their art, rather than the more
common art-historical or museological approach. This exhibition
examines the conditions of practice as a way into a genre. Digital
media artists have less of an economic base in art sales, and often
work in the same digital media by day for income as well as by night
as an artist. This situates digital artists between art and a
relatively new industry, as well as between their eerily similar day
and night activities, creating a kind of interference pattern that is
largely unexplored. This pattern is reflected in the art works, but
also, just as interestingly, in the day job projects of these
curators, programmers, and web-designers, often quite consciously.
This exhibition will look at a few of the more interesting cases,
taken from varied environments, and line up the art next to the day
job project as a way of uncovering how these new social,
intellectual, or economic patterns are influencing our art and the
rest of our lives.

I have a couple of people in mind for this show, but I'm writing to
you all to ask if you know of other artists who may present good
examples in this area - or if you yourself find yourself working in
this way. Ideally I would like to be able to exhibit an artist's
net.art next to projects they work on at their day job, and with the
help of the artist, try to make clear how themes, rebellions, or even
subconscious aesthetic decisions about information architecture or
programming may cross-over between the two. They need not be new
works.
I'm preferentially looking for artists working in California; but
that's not an unbreakable rule. So, if you are working in this area
or know of others who are, please contact me at this email address

The Emergence of Romantic Relationships Online
A Sociological Web Study

Why are people actually searching for romantic relationships online?
What is the difference between personal relationships emerging in cyberspace
and in real life? Does the internet appear to be the new institution, where
partner relationships emerge, develop and dissolve - beside traditional
institutions like workplace, school and disco? Our research object was the
biggest online dating service in Switzerland (www.partnerwinner.ch) with
more than 70'000 profiles ("virtual identities"). A total of 4110 German
speaking users of this site took part in a sociological web survey,
answering questions about their experience with online dating. The primary
goal of our team was to examine well known scientific controversies about
the real nature of romantic relationships in internet. Statistical data
concerning attitudes, expectations and motivations of people going online
have given us heuristic insight into the mechanisms that allow the emergence
of online relationships: how often and how fast can romantic relationships
emerge? Which types of persons are most likely to find and build up such
ties in cyberspace? Where are the borderlines between online and offline
life?
Our main assumption ("The cyberspace has a growing importance as a
place where one can find his partner with increasing probability") has been
clearly confirmed. As many as 23% of respondents reported to have found
long-term love relationships at "Partnerwinner.ch" and half of those
relationships still existed at the time of the survey. Moreover, 71% of the
people who succeeded in establishing a love relationship considered her or
his partner to be "the right one". Among those who reported having a love
relationship online 12 % had already "virtually" fallen in love by the sheer
exchange of email messages - that means without having ever met each other
in real life. Falling in love actually happened after the first email for 4%
of all successful online daters.

Net Art and Meta-Design: Collaboration and Co-Creation
There is a development in art that seems to have some overlap with a =
meta-design approach to interaction. An analysis of case studies from =
the field of interactive art highlights a relationship between =
authorship and intersubjectivity-in terms of a relation between creation =
and design-that takes place in interactive art and that is particularly =
exploited within some artistic collaborative systems based on digital =
networking.
This relationship raises a number of questions: How do these systems =
sustain the processes that lead to intersubjective creativity? How can =
collaboration lead to co-creation? On the basis of what initial =
conditions and interactive properties is co-creation experienced? What =
interactive strategies (in terms of motivations and mechanisms) and =
interaction rules are used? Finally, what kind of activities does the =
interface allow users to perform?
Through an analysis of different typologies and qualities of both =
interactivity and agency, exploited within some artistic collaborative =
systems, my work addresses issues at the convergence between aesthetics =
and HCI. Such issues raise fundamental philosophical questions, and can =
contribute to the development of a meta-design culture and practice.

The 2003 iteration of the Digital Arts and Culture (DAC)
international conference series is to be held on the city campus of
RMIT University, Melbourne, Australia from May 19 to 23, 2003.
MelbourneDAC:streaming wor(l)ds will bring together an international
cohort of artists, practitioners, developers, theorists and teachers
to define and explore major themes and ideas confronting contemporary
new media practice. The 2003 event will explore the theory and
practice of computer gaming, ergodic narrative, distributed and/or
immersive performance environments, and streaming media with a
particular focus on the real, imagined and wished for worlds that
these things create.
[what is the Digital Arts and Culture conference?]
DAC was founded in 1998 by Espen Aarseth as an international
conference focusing on new media theory and practice in critical
contexts. DAC seeks to bring together new media artists and theorists
in a spirit of collaboration and exploration. It has nurtured a
significant international community of young and innovative
researchers, artists and scholars in the interdisciplinary field of
new media, and has become the benchmark conference for research and
collaborative endeavour in new media. DAC offers a forum that
recognises the importance of bringing together leading practitioners
from art and theory for the exchange of ideas and to develop
international professional networks and knowledge economies.

una infraestructura informática y de telecomunicaciones puesta a disposición
de los artistas de Madrid o residentes en la ciudad.

Cuenta con estaciones de trabajo PC Pentium IV y MAC G4/733 iMac Power PC,
con periféricos (escaner, impresora, zip y grabadora de discos compacts, así
como un plotter).

La dernière expérience s'est très bien déroulée, mais j'ai eu quelques
problèmes techniques avec mon système de questionnaire pendant et après
l'expérience. Faute de mieux, j'ai aussi du utiliser un serveur commercial
qui dégoulinait de publicités, et cela a du dégoûter pas mal d'entre vous,
désolé! Ce n'est plus le cas maintenant. Bref, c'est la dernière fois que je
vous embêterai avec mon enquête, alors s'il vous plait, prenez quelques
instants pour donner votre sentiment sur l'expérience:

le faire que vous participiez ou non à la session de mardi. Il suffit
d'avoir déjà participé à une session du GP.

I would like to announce a new session of real-time collective graphic
interaction of the Poietic Generator on: Tuesday 25 June 2002 from 8.00AM to
9.00AM (Boulder Time) - that means from 2.00PM to 3.00PM (UTC/GMT). Pay

The latest GP session went very well, but we had some technical problems
with our questionnaire system both during and after the session. Moreover,
for want of anything better, I had used a commercial server so full of
advertising, sorry! This is not any longer the case. This is the last time I
will bother you, so please don't forget to fill my questionnaire in. Go to:
http://www.net-abacus.fr.st and click on "Poietic Generator". You can
complete the questionnaire whether or not you are a new or previous
participant to the GP, and even if you won't participate in this session! It
will take just few ticks...
The results of this investigation are published on the website. You will be
able to locate your anonymous answers immediately and to compare them with
those of the others, thanks to the code appearing at the top of the column
on the right side of the first matrix. Maybe it will interest some among
you!?
